On a cold winter's weekend day so close to Christmas, our family tradition is to snuggle on the couch and watch Christmas movies! What better way to watch a movie and snuggle then with a Hot Chocolate in hand (especially when it's in my Santa mug)?
While I was cuddling with my daughter on the couch watching "The Santa Claus" she asked "can we have hot chocolate?" Now, we don't keep those junky filled instant packages in the house so I was a little at a loss. I knew you could create a hot chocolate with raw cocoa powder and milk but how can I make that kid-friendly without adding a ton of sugar and, well, milk.
I got my brain a working and looked up some recipes online; I found one at Epicurious and knew I could make it my own and healthier and so I did! We made the recipe below in less than 10 minutes and yes, my children loved it!
Why is it healthier?
Instead of sugar, we used agave nectar, which better including than those chemically-derived and chemical-filled sweeteners. Why? Well, reducing your chemical load is an easy answer; in addition, agave is a real sugar, so a less processed food, and has a much lower glycemic index than sugar, meaning it releases slower into your bloodstream keeping your body at a happy even keel!
Why no dairy?
For us, it causes way too much mucus build up and leads to allergies, asthma and illnesses. Second, we try to reduce our load on the environment and reducing your intake of animal products is the top way to reduce the load (there are lots of documentaries you can watch, if you are looking for one, try Cowspiracy on Netflix). Plus more veggies in your body is not a bad thing!
What you need:
2 Tbsp raw cocoa powder
1-2 Tbsp agave nectar (I had to add 2 drops of Stevia in my daughters mug still)
Pinch of salt
2 cups unsweetened coconut milk (we like So Delicious)
1/4 tsp vanilla extract
What to do:
1) Combine the cocoa powder and agave nectar with 2 Tbsp of the coconut milk in a pot, whisking over low-medium heat, until combined and dissolved.
2) Add in the remaining milk and continue to whisk until heated thouroughly.
3) Enjoy in a festive mug and send yourself so much love for giving your body a healthier warm treat!
