1) Grab a free workout……that doesn’t suck!
Have you ever googled a free workout on YouTube and starting doing it only to realize it isn't that great, actually, it sucks! It’s likely because there was no engagement. A recorded class without the instructor having participants makes it kinda boring; plus, are they really sharing their best stuff? Well, why not grab a free workout from me that was taped from one of my live classes and created to maximize calorie and fat burn and build muscle! 2) Figure out what you love to do and schedule it in
What do you love to do? If you love to walk but you are forcing yourself to run then you are wasting your time. Love fitness classes but can’t seem to get to class; find an alternative that works better (find a new way to make it work!). By first assessing what you really enjoy you will not waste your time or money. The second part is scheduling it in with no exceptions! Well, ok, there are exceptions but if you are cancelling your workouts to stay late at work often, then it’s not really a scheduled event; it’s more like an annoying reminder of what you are not doing for your body and that sucks!
3) Know that there is no magic pill or fix
It takes a healthy diet and moving your body. There are no quick fixes, supplements or products that will make you healthy. There are products that can SUPPLEMENT your health plan but nothing will make you lose weight or increase your fitness without eating a whole food diet and exercise.
4) Love yourself where you are at
This is my FAVE way of improving your fitness and health. Your mindset is everything! Loving yourself where you are right now means doing healthy things for body, mind and spirit. It also means embracing exactly as you are in this moment and realizing you are exactly where you need to be; that you are on a journey and that journey is a gift. This is so important because when you do reach your goal you have to be happy there. If you cannot find happiness where you are now, you will not find happiness when you reach your goal. I know from experience, I was unhappy at 217 lbs and unhappy at 150 lbs. The only thing that changed was my body, my mindset had some catching up to do. I had to learn to focus away from my goal and on the good things I do for my body. I have actually gained weight from my goal weight and I’m actually happier. Not because I reached my goal but because I live my life without constant focus of my goal. My journey to love myself is not over and it never will be, we are always growing and learning, but I have come a long way from the days of only loving myself once I reach a goal!
5) You don’t have to kill yourself to be fit
I believe the best way to get and stay fit includes incorporating 2 HIIT workouts and 2 muscle based workouts a week with active days in between (like walks or playing with the kids). Rest days are important too so please don’t kill yourself 7 days a week to get healthy.
6) Eat easy
Plan your meals and don’t make them complicated. Think of my “3 every 3” rule. Eat a combination of protein, fibre and healthy fat at each meal and eat about every 3 hours. Even if you work from home, planning your meals and “packing a lunch” can help keep you on track (even I could benefit from this advice!).
7) Find an accountability partner who will encourage you and be compassionate
Nothing spells success than someone who can send you friendly reminders to move your body, focus on loving yourself and being there when you need advice. I know this is the key to success and that is why I incorporate accountability coaching in my online group fitness and yoga class program. Plus, sending little messages of encouragement and love is fun!
Want a free way to stay fit? Stretch. Balance and flexibility are considered elements of fitness. Plus, there is nothing like starting a fitness program and then injuring yourself because you didn’t take the time to stretch! It takes about 5 minutes to stretch the muscles used in a workout so do it!
