"I eat a healthy diet, I don’t need supplements!!!!!!"
That is what I used to say: I eat a variety of healthy fruits, vegetables and lean meats, I don’t need supplements.
The funny thing was that even though I was eating a healthy diet, exercising 6 days a week and getting plenty of rest, I (and my family) was constantly sick. I am not exaggerating; if we called up my old employer, which I am sure would likely not be a welcomed action, and we looked at how often I had to take sick time it would show at least every other month. This sick time was either for me, my kids or both!
I suffered from chronic bronchitis every winter since about the age of 12. It usually started as a cold and moved to my lungs and it would take months to clear. Unfortunately it appeared my youngest, who does take after mommy in more ways than one, followed suit. She was getting respiratory infections every other month and was on puffers often.
That was when I decided that something had to be missing from our diet and decided to start taking pharmaceutical grade and third-party reviewed supplements. I read medical journals regarding respiratory infections and the best way to help support an immune system against them. I found a study from the Journal of Applied Microbiology that said children and adults who were on a really good probiotic regime had less respiratory and ear infections and if they did get one, the duration was shorter. Immediately after this, the whole family was on probiotics; for more information on the product we trust (and a fun video) click HERE.
Of course, this was on top of the multivitamin and fish oil that we were already taking. I learned that when it comes to the health of my family, taking a high quality (pharmaceutical grade) supplement line is non-negotiable! We all know that due to our lifestyles (eating habits, processed foods, stress, farming practices, pollution, etc.) we may not be getting all the nutrients are bodies need. This is why it is so important to supplement a healthy diet and why I found myself always sick. I find it interesting that I was so resistant to supplements at first, even after having completed a Master’s in plant sciences; where I studied how our farming practices are increasing Cadmium, a heavy metal, in our soil and disrupting the growth of our plants. We all need to find our own path, right?
In conclusion, my family’s health story ends with us not getting sick in over a year. Actually, that is not true, my youngest did run two fevers, on two separate occasions, but they lasted 6 hours and that was her only symptom. It appears her immune system can fight off whatever is lurking in her body, which is a gigantic and much applauded change for us!
